The Red Magic 5G was released in March and we now have its successor with the Red Magic 5S which brings a revised cooling system with a silver plated steam chamber. The rest of the spec sheet, as well as the design of the phone, are quite similar to the outgoing Red Magic 5G in dimensions.
The big new addition to the 5S is the stylized ICE Ag silver-plated cooling pad. It should perform better than conventional copper heat pipes in most smartphones, which will lead to reduced throttling. The phone also retains the 15,000 RPM rotating fan of its predecessor, which also helps it cool down while charging at its maximum speed of 55 W.
Up front we have a 6.65-inch FHD + AMOLED display with minimal top and bottom bezels. The refresh rate is 144Hz and comes with 240Hz touch sampling. The phone also features capacitive touch triggers which have an even higher touch rate of 320Hz for top performance in competitive games.
The back features a Sony IMX686 64MP main camera as well as an 8MP ultra-wide snapper and 2MP macro shooter. As is the case with most gaming smartphones, there is also RGB lighting.
Like its predecessor, the Red Magic 5S is powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It boots Red Magic OS on Android 10 and comes with the same 4500mAh battery with 55W charge.
The nubia Red Magic 5S will be available in a two-tone blue and red color as well as in silver. The base 8 / 128GB version costs CNY 3,799 ($ 542) with pre-sales in China starting today. There’s also a 12/256 GB version for CNY 4,399 ($ 628) as well as a high-end 16/256 GB model for CNY 4,999 ($ 715). Official sales in China begin August 1, while global availability will follow in September.
