Looks like gaming phones in 2020 are all the rage and Xiaomi is also joining the bandwagon. Finally, the successor to Black Shark 3 has arrived in the form of Black Shark 3S with some improvements. The phone’s 6.67-inch AMOLED display (at 1080p + resolution in 20: 9 aspect ratio) now has a refresh rate of 120Hz and the touch sample rate has increased to 270Hz with a touch latency of 17 ms. We expected to see the latest Snapdragon 865 Plus SoC on board, but it features the Snapdragon 865 processor.
The phone is initially available in the Chinese market and the global release follows in the coming months. The rest of the Black Shark 3S specs are high end and what you would expect from a gaming device. There is 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB variants.
The other hardware specs are pretty much the same – there’s a 4,729mAh battery with an included 65W fast charger that’s super fast. The camera setup is also unchanged with a 64 MP sensor (f / 1.8 aperture), 13 MP 120 degree FOV ultra-wide lens (f / 2.25), and 5 MP depth sensor. Surprisingly, the 20MP lens up front is built into the top bezel rather than being a perforation form factor, which is the norm these days.
The gaming device has the Joy UI 12 in addition to Android 10 – designed for gamers. It has custom modes and macro controls so gamers can have a seamless gaming experience. And yes, the phone has the capacitive shoulder buttons for a tactical advantage in gameplay.
Black Shark 3S The base version of the 12GB / 128GB configuration costs CNY 4,000 (~ $ 573) and the 256 GB variant is priced at CNY 4,300 (~ $ 615). They can be ordered immediately in China in Skyfall Black and Crystal Blue; shipping begins August 4 for both. The top 12GB / 512GB variant is priced at CNY 4,800 (~ $ 687) and is not yet on pre-order, but will be available in the coming days.
